Your journey from elite pole vaulter to wellness advocate was sparked by a diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome. Looking back, what’s one piece of advice you’d give someone who wants to avoid burning out?
This is such a great question! It's hard to choose just one lesson but I'd have to say 'Slowing down and doing less can sometimes be more beneficial than constant effort.' I feel like this lesson is a valuable one for everyone, not just those looking to avoid burnout. In a society that glorifies hustle and achievement, we can all feel like we are not doing enough, no matter how much we are actually doing!
One of my biggest realisations over the last few years has been how much rest, especially less mental stimulation & stress can affect the quality of your output. Some of my strongest training sessions, best business ideas, and solutions to problems have come after a day lounging at the beach!
Back when you were competing at an elite level, wellness probably meant something very different. How would you describe what it means to you now?
As an athlete, performance was such a big influence on my wellness (especially my happiness), and the pressure I would put on myself to constantly perform (even just at training) really affected me. Back then, wellness was the ability to keep working, keep achieving, and to push the limits every day. It was no surprise that this kind of mindset was unsustainable and eventually drained me.
Now, I have realised how important balance is. And with balance, happiness thrives. The ability to feel strong, be pain/illness free, and mentally clear is what I strive for. And this comes with effort and consistency, but also with rest and recovery. Ultimately, if I can move my body, eat a healthy meal, and also have time to mentally unwind and rest each day, I know I am doing my best to stay well and happy.
Through Fresh Body Fit Mind, you guide others toward wellness. What self-care rituals from your own life do you most frequently share with your community?
The key message behind Fresh Body Fit Mind (FBFM) is finding balance between strength, fitness, mobility, coordination, and recovery. It's not about quick fixes or trending workouts. I want people to be able to walk away from a workout or classes with me feeling like they have moved well, achieved, and had fun, but also learnt something that can help build their confidence in their body and mindset.
FBFM is definitely a hub of movement variety. From energy boosting HIIT workouts, to technique focused weights workouts and pilates, and recovery like yoga, mobility and breathwork. On top of this, we have amazing plant based recipes, workout programs to help you reach your goals, and 30day challenges that get our whole global community motivated and moving together.
The wellness space is constantly evolving and my main goal is to keep learning and growing as a teacher. FBFM is a reflection of that and I hope to continue to expand its offerings to make sure our community always gets the best quality wellness experience.
What's your favourite way to start your day?
I absolutely LOVE starting my day getting a coffee from my local cafe and then going for a walk with my partner Adam and our 2 dogs Charlie & Willow. Even better if it's nice and warm and sunny and we can walk on the beach!
You spend a lot of time outside in nature getting lots of vitamin D. What essentials are always in your
training bag?
I am such an outdoorsey person, definitely solar charged! I'm usually training at the athletics track, which is really warm and sunny so my training bag always has a towel to sit on during rest breaks, my phone & speaker, training diary, a protein snack for after, drink bottle, sunnies, lip gloss and Mother SPF!
Coming back to pole vaulting is such a full-circle moment—what’s bringing you the most joy about it right now?
I actually really love the atmosphere at the athletics track, and just the general vibe of training. It really feels like a blessing to be able to do pole vault this time around so I feel incredibly grateful for even the littlest things. I don't mind a little hard work, and routine and consistency really drive me, so having my training plan and just chipping away at it each day outside in the fresh air feels so nice.
I really missed structured training and having goals to work towards when I was away from competitive sports, so it's nice to be 'back in the grind!' haha. But seriously, I've realised how unique
