With a background in science, a childhood spent engulfed in nature and a family illness spotlighting harmful chemicals in everyday products, in 2019 Tandia Walsh created the natural mineral sunscreen brand MOTHER SPF.
The Founder
Growing up on the coastlines of Western Australia, Tandia inherited a passion for preserving the ocean from her parents, pearl farm owners outside of Broome. Summers spent fishing, crabbing and camping led to a natural progression of studying in Marine Biology.
In 2016, Tandia’s world shifted on its axis when her mother, who previously had Melanoma, was diagnosed with another bout of cancer. The news evoked a heightened urgency for organic food and natural skincare products. Tandia took it upon herself to ensure her mum specifically eliminated anything containing endocrine disrupting properties that could harm her newly sensitive skin. It was then, while trying to find safe and effective skincare, that she discovered how many skincare products contain questionable ingredients that are not only harmful to the body, but to the environment.
Using her background in science, Tandia began her journey into creating an SPF range that not only protected your skin against the sun but used safe sustainable ingredients that nourished the skin and didn’t compromise on aesthetics.
After four years of research, MOTHER SPF was launched in 2020, with one product: an Australian-made mineral SPF that met the highest global SPF testing and manufacturing standards in the world.

At MOTHER SPF, clean means creating products that are safe for people and the planet, without compromising on performance.
For us, clean is not about exclusion for the sake of it. It is about making thoughtful, transparent choices, using ingredients that are proven, purposeful and responsibly sourced. Every component in our formulas serves a function, whether it is protection, stability, or texture. Nothing more, nothing less.
Our sunscreens are made with 100% mineral UV filters, naturally derived ingredients, and biocompatible actives that support the skin barrier. We avoid ingredients that are unnecessary or potentially harmful to skin health or the environment, including silicones, parabens, synthetic preservatives and fragrances.
Clean also extends beyond the formula. It means sustainable packaging, carbon-neutral shipping and a commitment to traceability across every stage of production.
For us, clean is not a claim. It is a standard. It is the way we formulate, the way we source, and the way we do business.

Every MOTHER SPF formula goes through rigorous testing to ensure it performs exactly as promised. From SPF validation to water resistance, microbiological safety, and dermatological testing, every result matters. We don’t take shortcuts or rely on assumptions, we rely on evidence.
All our sunscreens have been independently tested to confirm they meet all requirements under the Australian and New Zealand Sunscreen Standard (AS/NZS 2604:2021). This includes assessments for SPF performance, broad spectrum UVA protection and water resistance, as well as additional testing to verify skin compatibility and long-term stability.
At every stage, the goal remains the same: to create protection that’s not only effective but consistently safe, stable, and comfortable to use, no matter who you are or where you wear it.
