Watching: Grenfell: Uncovered
I hadn’t heard much about the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire until my partner suggested we watch Netflix’s new documentary. A friend who was in London at the time said it was horrific and after watching, I understand why it remains such a sensitive topic.
The film lays bare the negligence, systemic failure, and greed that turned a kitchen fire into catastrophe, worsened by flammable cladding added for appearance and a “stay put” policy that trapped residents. Heartbreaking to think this happened only in 2017…. and that companies still gain profit from materials they know are highly toxic to humans.
Listening: On Purpose
Jay Shetty (think the modern-day monk) is the host of the ever-inspiring podcast, On Purpose. I will admit you need to be in the mood for something deep and meaningful with this podcast series, but it’s my go-to podcast whenever I am lacking inspiration and needing a fresh perspective. It's the world's #1 mental health podcast for good reason.
Reading: Consider yourself kissed
Set in London from 2013 to 2023, Consider Yourself Kissed follows Coralie, a witty Australian copywriter turned stepmother, whose meet-cute with political journalist Adam sparks a ten-year journey of love, motherhood, and identity.
It’s a realistic depiction of a long-term relationship complicated by kids, aging parents, politics, and jobs. The writing is superb, and the representation of real life is second to none as it explores the challenges faced by many young women today.
Following: Amanda Bisk
I recently attended a retreat with Amanda Bisk, former Commonwealth Games pole vaulter who was on track for the London Olympics before Chronic Fatigue Syndrome abruptly ended her career. She shared her journey from years of recovery to rediscovering her identity beyond sport. I follow her not just for exercise and mobility tips, but for her incredible comeback. 13 years after competing as an elite pole vaulter, and despite being told she was “too old,” she’s back and flying (literally) over the poles. Follow her for a reminder that your dreams are always within reach.
