MOTHER SPF: Where Every Formula is Backed by Rigorous SPF Testing
At Mother SPF, testing is how we uphold our promise of performance, safety and integrity. Every product we make is developed and manufactured to meet TGA standards ensuring reliable protection and a consistent experience on the skin.
The testing every Mother SPF suncare formulation undertakes
SPF Testing: Independent testing was carried out in accordance with ISO 24444:2019 and AS/NZS 2604:2021 to determine the product’s Sun Protection Factor (SPF). The study confirmed results consistent with a high level of UVB protection, demonstrating the formula’s ability to maintain strong, reliable SPF performance while using 100% mineral and natural filters.Broad Spectrum (UVA) Testing: An in vitro UVA Protection Factor (UVA-PF) test was conducted following ISO 24443:2012. The results confirmed that the Mother SPF Tinted Base Face Sunscreen meets the definition of broad spectrum, offering balanced protection against both UVA and UVB radiation.
Stability & Compatilbility Testing: The formula underwent a full stability program to assess its physical, chemical and sensory integrity over time. Testing confirmed that the product remains stable and effective when stored under recommended conditions, maintaining its texture, tint and protective performance throughout its shelf life.
Packaging compatibility testing ensures the sunscreen formula remains stable and protected in its packaging throughout its life. The results confirmed there was no leaking, separation or change in product quality during the test period, verifying that the packaging maintains integrity and supports the formula’s stability.
Preservative Efficacy Testing (PET): All Mother SPF products undergo PET testing to ensure microbiological safety once opened. The Tinted Base Face Sunscreen achieved an A-grade result under BP Criteria A. Confirming strong resistance to microbial growth and maintaining product safety throughout its use. Together, these tests confirm what matters most: that this formula is safe, stable and delivers reliable mineral protection every day.
Dermatological Patch Test (48-hour occlusive test): To assess skin compatibility the product underwent a dermatological patch test under medical supervision at an independent clinical laboratory. The study evaluated how skin responds to the formula after a single, controlled application under patch conditions. The test was carried out on 12 adults with sensitive skin, with the product applied to the upper back for 48 hours. Skin reactions were assessed by a trained clinical team, and results were expressed using a recognised Mean Irritation Index (MII) - a standard dermatological measure used to classify irritation potential.
The sunscreen achieved a Mean Irritation Index of 0.04, placing it well within the ‘Non-Irritant’ category. To put this into context: With an MII of 0.04, the formula sits far below the threshold for irritation which is 0.25, confirming excellent skin tolerance. These findings demonstrate that the sunscreen is gentle on skin and suitable for daily use including for those with sensitive skin.
